At Picketts Barton Spa, sustainability isn’t a feature - it’s the foundation. Tucked into the tranquil Devon countryside, our spa retreat is completely off-grid, designed to tread lightly on the Earth while offering a luxurious escape that feels deeply connected to the natural world.
Our energy comes primarily from 32 solar panels that power everything from LED lighting to the sauna, with a discreet backup generator for peace of mind. Fresh spring water is drawn from a 50-foot-deep borehole, filtered and UV-treated on-site, and even fills our hydrotherapy pool for a bathing experience as pure as the surrounding landscape.
Heating is provided by efficient oil underfloor systems and a wood burner in the kitchen-diner, creating warmth and atmosphere with minimal impact. Wastewater is carefully treated in our own sewage system, with clean greywater used to replenish the developing lake - which itself is supported by rainfall runoff from the property and nearby fields. We even offer a free electric vehicle charging point, helping our guests travel more sustainably.
Our commitment to biodiversity runs just as deep. Wildflower meadows, native hedgerows, and purpose-built habitats like bug hotels, bird boxes, and bat boxes have turned the grounds into a haven for wildlife. Deer, foxes, owls, dragonflies, and countless songbirds are frequent visitors, and each element of our landscape has been chosen to support and enhance the life around us.
